Commentary
First published in Schumacher 1994: 318 f. Autopsied by Stefan Schumacher in October 1992.
Images in Gempeler 1976: Abb. 12a (photo = LIR) and 12b (drawing = Schumacher 1994: Abb. 6 = Schumacher 2004: Taf. 17,2 = LIR), MLR (photo and drawing = Gempeler 1976 photo and drawing).
Inscribed upside-down on lower part of the bronze's base; length about 4 cm. According to Schumacher 1994, the letters are clearly legible, including the two characters in the middle transcribed v. A reading vv is of course phonetically unfavourable, especially seeing as the ending of the inscription in -ie suggests a Raetic individual name and hence linguistic content (pace LIR).
The letter forms clearly demonstrate the inscription to be written in the Sanzeno alphabet; the inscription should be considered part of the subcorpus of the Sanzeno votive inscriptions on bronzes (as done in LIR, cp. also Ciurletti 1992: nota 20), even though the provenance of the object cannot be verified.
The complex symbol on the horse's croup is unparalleled on Sanzeno bronzes; for ornamental (?) strokes like the ones to the symbol's left cp. HU-5 bronze.
