Commentary

Deverbal noun in -u derived from a preterite form in -k-, as also attested in Etruscan (e.g. aliqu 'gift'). utiku appears in four inscriptions on primary sacrificial objects (i.e. objects with no discernible everyday use, IT-5 plaque, NO-3 plaque, NO-15 rod, NO-17 bone point), and on four which are associated with ritual (HU-7 situla, VR-3 spit, PA-1 spatula, BZ-3 simpulum); a meaning pertaining to the sphere of ritual, offering or dedication ('given' uel sim.) is therefore likely (cf. eluku). See Rix 1998: 31–41, who (p. 38) tentatively suggests a connection with the preterite utince in the Liber Linteus (LL II D9), which can be argued to indicate an action in the context of a sacrifice. utin-ce is syncopated archaic Etr. *uti-ane-ke, a preterite from a de-nominal base *uti-ane, while the Raetic verbal noun would be derived from a preterite formed directly from the root.
