Commentary
First published in Mayr 1950: 408 (no. V). Autopsied by TIR in October 2014.
Images in Roberti 1950: Tav. II,V (drawing), Mayr 1950: 409 (V), Pellegrini 1951: no. 5a (photo) and 307 (5a) (drawing), LIR (photo and drawing = IR).
Inscribed in two lines on the front of the bronze, both starting at the stylised feet; length 2.8 cm and 2.6 + 1 cm resp. The letters are well legible and unambiguous. In line 1, final is a little offset to the bottom to avoid the bulge of the figurine's arm; in line 2, final is written on the neck of the figurine for the same reason. In neither of the two bars is touching the respective hasta; a reading ni can be excluded.
We are probably concerned with names in both lines – either both are patronymics in -nu, or vaþanu is an individual name only happening to end in -nu. Neither name is independently attested.
Further references: Pellegrini 1951: 310 f. (no. 5a) and 322, Mayr 1952: 176 (no. 5a), Lejeune 1951: 214, Vetter 1954: 71 (no. 5a), Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 222.
