Commentary

First published in Pellegrini & Sebesta 1965: 13 f. (no. 7). Autopsied by TIR in November 2014.

Images in Pellegrini & Sebesta 1965: 14 (drawing) and fig. 10 (photo), IR (drawing = LIR), LIR (photo).

Length of the remains 7 cm. Of the first partly preserved letter, two bars can be seen in the upper area after the breaking edge – the reading N s by Pellegrini & Sebesta can be confirmed; Mancini's reading M s is due to his overlooking the not easily visible left one of the two bars. The rest of the inscription is well legible. We are very likely concerned with a shorter fragment of the inscription in line 1 of SR-1. Differences between the two inscriptions are the shape of Alpha and the orientation of Heta. The punctuation mark inscribed into final R s looks more pronounced than in SR-1, but if it was not drilled in rather than scratched, it was the same circle shape as in SR-1, with the bulge in the centre broken off. For the use of Venetic syllable punctuation in Raetic context see Script.

As the identification of words is problematic even in the more complete SR-1, no interpretation can be offered. Note that the preserved fragment of SR-1 antler represents a piece of antler in its full breadth, and no further lines are inscribed below the one described above.
