Commentary

First published in PID.

Picture in LIR (drawing).
Along the edge on the animal's back, apparently a mere succession of short strokes and angles: Whatmough, from Conway's drawing, read pnippipiav.i. Mancini, despite conceding that the inscription is "in realtà inutilizzabile", suggested possible readings il.nuapiśav.i. or la.nuep.mav.i..
The strokes look suspiciously like the upper part of an inscription. Since the object is obviously undamaged, the interpretation of the inscription hinges on the question of whether the object might be a tessera, with the lower parts of the signs written on the other half. Mark the possible, appropriately word-final occurrence of Venetic H4 s.
Due to a misunderstanding by Whatmough, inscriptions SZ-20 and SZ-21 were thought to be inscribed on two different, though similar, objects.
