Commentary

Inscribed on the lower side of the bronze's base; length about 3.7 cm. The symbol appears on two Sanzeno votives (SZ-4.2 and SZ-5.2) where it may be interpreted as a factory mark, but these objects are of a different type. A closer fit is SZ-7 on a bronze of a horse (without rider), which also features alongside illegible characters on the lower side of the base. Note, however, that in HU-5.3, the two oblique strokes and the triangle on the left are applied with a much coarser instrument than , suggesting that the two groups do not belong together. (Another triangle shape, also applied with a broad chisel, is found on the horse's chest. For this, cp. SZ-20 and ???.) The most similar object to this one does not have any additional marks which might be compared. See here for possible interpretations of inscriptions with doubtful status.
