The value of this property refers to the inscription in its entirety. Individual letters may display an orientation that goes against the overall orientation of the text. On writing direction and retrograde letters see [[index::Script]]. ''Boustrophedon'' only denominates inscriptions written in "classical" boustrophedon; texts written in reverse boustrophedon (with every second line being turned by 180°), where both lines ultimately have the same orientation, are filed as ''sinistroverse'' or ''dextroverse''. ''Mixed'' means that the writer demonstrably turned the object during the application of one line, resulting in a change of writing direction. This is to be distinguished from cases where the letters in the inscription do not allow the direction in which has been written to be determined – this latter case signfied by the term ''ambiguous''. ''Unknown'' is used only when it is not clear that the respective inscription represents proper script at all.

In inscriptions with mixed direction, the presentation of the original script of the text is oriented on the direction of the greater part of the inscription (e.g., dextroverse when more than half of the inscription is judged to be dextroverse). Ambiguous inscriptions are as a rule presented as sinistroverse. ''Unknown'' is used only when it is not clear that the respective inscription represents proper script at all.

Definition

The value of this property refers to the inscription in its entirety. Individual letters may display an orientation that goes against the overall orientation of the text. On writing direction and retrograde letters see Script. Boustrophedon only denominates inscriptions written in "classical" boustrophedon; texts written in reverse boustrophedon (with every second line being turned by 180°), where both lines ultimately have the same orientation, are filed as sinistroverse or dextroverse. Mixed means that the writer demonstrably turned the object during the application of one line, resulting in a change of writing direction. This is to be distinguished from cases where the letters in the inscription do not allow the direction in which has been written to be determined – this latter case signfied by the term ambiguous. In inscriptions with mixed direction, the presentation of the original script of the text is oriented on the direction of the greater part of the inscription (e.g., dextroverse when more than half of the inscription is judged to be dextroverse). Ambiguous inscriptions are as a rule presented as sinistroverse. Unknown is used only when it is not clear that the respective inscription represents proper script at all.
