Objects from the area of Riffian / Rifiano:

• archeological site Burgstall:

The finding place Burgstall is situated at the entrance of the Passeier Valley (German: Passeier or Passeiertal; Italian: Passiria or Val Passiria), near the small village of Riffian / Rifiano. The place is located on the southern side of a mound which is composed of the different small terraces. So far the remains of at least 12 buildings and their walls can be distinguished. Therefore the archeological place Burgstall can be considered as settlement of a population belonging to the Fritzens-Sanzeno culture.
The archeological site Burgstall can be dated to the late Iron Age. On the basis of the findings it can be stated that the beginnings of the Raetic settlement goes back to the 4th century BC (based on a small bowl with S-shaped profile and stamped decoration). Related to the end of the settlement the fibula type "Tiroler Schüsselfibel" must be taken as evidence. This fibula type can be dated to 2nd half of the 1st century BC. House 1 was definitely destroyed by fire and this can be assumed probably for the entire settlement. Because of the absence of findings of the Roman period Niederwanger and Nothdurfter presume a correlation between the Roman Alpine campaign of 15 BC and the end of the settlement (cp. Niederwanger & Nothdurfter 1999: 163).
The first findings go back to a small survey realised in 1977. A systematic excavation with focus on house 1 was initiated 1994 under the direction of Hans Nothdurfter. All the following listed objects came to light in the area of house 1 and were excavated in 1994.
