Commentary

The inscription was first edited in Franz 1958b, where is also first mentioned the object itself. The inscription, about 8.5 cm long, is on the exterior face of the sieve funnel, under the rim. Due to the good condition of the inscription there is no doubt about the reading like Franz 1958b was given it as first. Only Mayr (Mayr 1960f:389) and in his succession Tibiletti Bruno (Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 221) had proposed an other reading (pianusapan). Mayr had supposed that the writer has forgotten the vertical hasta of the last N by accident.
In view of the inscription the doubt has come up about the authenticity. Schumacher supposes that the sieve is originally from the Roman period, but the inscription come from a later time as imitation in the style of SZ-16 and the here written inscription laθurus ipianus apanin (Schumacher 2004: 336).
