Definition
The character number of an inscription is the number of all its characters, including letters, meta-characters (separators, symbols, delimiters etc.) and characters of doubtful status. An inscription page usually displays both a character number and a letter number – the character number is then higher than the letter number, as the inscription also contains meta-characters, which are included in the character count. Only a letter number and no character number is given when the inscription contains only letters; the character number is implicitly identical to the letter number. The character number can never be lower than the letter number. Only a character number and no letter number is given when it is not clear that any of the characters are indeed letters, i.e. that the inscription represents proper script.
