The inscription was first edited in Franz 1958b, where is also first mentioned the object itself. The inscription, about 8.5 cm long, is on the exterior face of the sieve funnel, under the rim. Due to the good condition of the inscription there is no doubt about the reading like Franz 1958b was given it as first. Only Mayr (Mayr 1960f:389) and in his succession Tibiletti Bruno (Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 221) had proposed an other reading (pianusapan). Mayr had supposed that the writer has forgotten the vertical hasta of the last by accident.<br>In view of the inscription the doubt has come up about the authenticity. Schumacher supposes that the sieve is originally from the Roman period, but the inscription come from a later time as imitation in the style of and the here written inscription laθurus ipianus apanin (Schumacher 2004: 336).<br>Further references: Pictures in Mayr 1960f: 389 (drawing of the inscription), IR: 286 (drawing of the inscription) and LIR: 150-151 (photo of the object and drawing of the inscription).

While Franz 1958b read pianusapau in spite of the oddly misaligned U, Mayr 1960f and in his succession Tibiletti Bruno 1978 proposed pianusapan with the hasta of N missing due to a mistake by the writer. While Mayr 1960f does not argue his point further, it is likely that he was thinking of the inscription laθurus ipianus apanin. The fact that NO-2 represents an apparently nonsensical section of the well segmentable SZ-16 suggests that the inscription might be either an unsophisticated imitation (the sieve is originally from the Roman period) or a forgery, in any case made by a person who knew SZ-16 but was unable to read it. Commentary

First published in Franz 1958b.
Further references: Mayr 1960f: 389, Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 221.

The inscription, about 8.5 cm long, is located right under the rim and in good condition. While Franz read pianusapau in spite of the oddly misaligned U2 s, Mayr and in his succession Tibiletti Bruno proposed pianusapan with the hasta of N s missing due to a mistake by the writer. While Mayr does not argue his point further, it is likely that he was thinking of the inscription SZ-16 laθurus ipianus apanin. (See Schumacher 2004: 336.)
