Embossed with a punctiform punch. Usually assumed to run dextroverse from the end of the hilt towards the blade. Franz read Latin LT or LP VALENTINUS with kursive e, Mancini tentatively reads the middle section as valen. Hardly legible due to corrosion, possibly pseudo-script. Faint traces of possibly intentional strokes on the other side of the hilt – Franz detected N preceded by two stokes and suspected a repetition of the owner's name.
