Commentary
Ceramic fragment.
Body sherd of a large vessel. Clay grey in colour.
The above-mentioned dimensions result of the autopsy by the Thesaurus Inscriptionum Raeticarum. Marinetti indicates: "dimensioni cm 7.5 x 4,5" (cp. Marinetti 2000: 74).
Remains of an inscription.
The archaeological finds VR-6 antler, VR-7 bone, VR-8 bone and the present ceramic fragment were picked up during an archaeological survey on the hill of the Castello di Montorio, near to Verona, in 1998 (cp. Marinetti 2004: 409; moreover: MLR: 257).
The discoveries which all can be put into a context of residential structure, indicate an "ampio arco cronologico (dal V secolo all’età imperiale)"; a Raetic presence however can be determined for the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. For more details see Marinetti 2004: 409 or MLR: 257.
The ceramic fragment was first published by Marinetti, however with particular and exclusive regard to the characters (cp. Marinetti 2000: 74–75 [No. 1]). In 2004 Marinetti mentioned the sherd another time: "I reperti iscritti sono un frammento ceramico con segni (...), un frammento di corno e due ossicini (...)" (cp. Marinetti 2004: 409) whereas this study was exclusively focused on the antler as well as the two bones (cp. VR-7 bone, VR-8 bone) and the inscriptions.
In the recently released study about the Raetic inscriptions by Marchesini the object is not incorporated.
Autopsied by the Thesaurus Inscriptionum Raeticarum in November 2015.
