Commentary
Remains of a bronze cist.
Highly smashed and bent.
On the edge an inscription.
The cist was used as ossuary which was buried at a depth of 1.40 meters.
Excavations directed by Antonio Nicolussi Moretto since autumn 1928. Major part of the funerals ossuaries, only three were cremation burials.
In the recently released study by Marchesini it is indicated: "Bolzano, Ufficio Beni Archeologici. Inv. BV1" (cp. MLR: 252). However, the study by the team of the Thesaurus Inscriptionum Raeticarum has already shown in November 2014 that the bronze cist is not stored in the Amt für Bodendenkmäler Bozen / Ufficio Beni archeologici Bolzano. A new request to the Amt für Bodendenkmäler Bozen / Ufficio Beni archeologici Bolzano with the actual information by Marchesini revealed that the inventory number "BV" given by Marchesini refers to the collection "Brixen, Vinzentinum" and indeed the inventory number "BV1" is applied to a well preserved bronze situla. But the present object is only a fragment of a bronze vessel. Also in the Stadtmuseum Bozen / Museo Civico di Bolzano the fragment of a bronze cist was untraceable as the study by the team of the Thesaurus Inscriptionum Raeticarum has already shown in September 2014. In all probability the bronze cist must regarded as lost by now.
Due to the fact that the object was not traceable so far, no autopsy by the Thesaurus Inscriptionum Raeticarum is possible. Therefore the indications follow the information given in literature (cp. below the bibliography).
