Commentary

First published in Mayr 1951: 30 ff. (no. VII). Autopsied by TIR in October 2014.

Images in Roberti 1950: Tav. II,VII (drawing) = Mayr 1951: 31 (VII), Pellegrini 1951: no. 7 (photo) and 307 (7) (drawing), LIR (photo and drawing = IR).

Inscribed on the foot of the bronze, length about 2.9 cm. The characters are well discernible, but cannot be read. From the two complex characters and the symbol symbol s, it may be deduced that the characters are to be looked at upside-down (with the figurine standing on its head). From right to left, two vertical strokes, followed by an oblique line addI2 s, from which extend four bars: one top right line d 20 s, three on the left side as in E s. After a space, another complex character similar to M d, but with the bar touching the hasta a little below the top. Two more vertical strokes, another space, and symbol s. Both Mayr and Pellegrini 1951: 311 f. (no. 7) (very tentatively) read the M d-like character as a letter and the other complex character as a ligature, but Vetter 1954: 71 (no. 7) points out the space separating them. Cp. HU-5.3. Maybe pseudo-script; see here for possible interpretations of inscriptions with doubtful status.

Further references: Mayr 1952: 176 (no. 7).
