Along the edge on the animal's back, apparently a mere succession of short strokes and angles: Whatmough, from Conway's drawing, read ''pnippipiav.i.'' The strokes look suspiciously like the upper part of an inscription. Since the object is obviously undamaged, the interpretation of the inscription hinges on [[index::SZ-20 statuette|the question of whether the object might be a tessera]], with the lower parts of the signs written on the other half. Commentary

First published in PID. Autopsied by TIR in November 2013.

Picture in LIR (drawing).

Along the edge on the animal's back, apparently a mere succession of short strokes and angles: Whatmough, from Conway's drawing, read punctuation7 sI spunctuation7 sV sA sI sP2 sI sP2 sP2 sI sN sP2 s pnippipiav.i.. Mancini, despite conceding that the inscription is "in realtà inutilizzabile", suggested possible readings il.nuapiśav.i. or la.nuep.mav.i.. Despite the appropriately word-final occurrence of Venetic H4 s, the stokes are more likely to be decorative, probably indicating a mane (see SZ-20 on the question of which animal we are looking at).

Due to a misunderstanding by Whatmough, inscriptions SZ-20 and SZ-21 were thought to be inscribed on two different, though similar, objects.
