The value of this property refers to the inscription in its entirety. Individual letters may display an orientation that goes against the overall orientation of the text. On writing direction and retrograde letters see [[index::Script]]. ''Boustrophedon'' only denominates inscriptions written in "classical" boustrophedon; texts written in reverse boustrophedon (with every second line being turned by 180°), where both lines ultimately have the same orientation, are filed as ''sinistroverse'' or ''dextroverse''. The direction in which an inscription is written may be difficult to determine on occasion – this is signfied by the term ''ambiguous''. ''Unknown'' is used only when it is not clear that the respective inscription represents proper script at all.
