Commentary

First published in Schumacher 1992.
Picture in Sinnhuber 1949: Taf. XXV (43) (photo).
A s and Z s are clearly legible, though the presence of rare z casts doubt on the interpretation of the signs as script. Three more strokes are visible crossing the breaking edge, but cannot be positively arranged to form letters.
Contradictory statements concerning the craftsmanship in Sinnhuber 1949: 64 (before firing) and Schumacher 2004 (after firing). The signs on this as well as on the other potsherds found at the Himmelreich were retraced with chalk for the photo in Sinnhuber 1949.
