Commentary

First published in Giovanelli 1834. Autopsied by TIR in November 2014.

Pictures in Giovanelli 1834: drawing (= Giovanelli 1844), Inghirami 1828: Tav. XII (drawing), Giovanelli 1845: tav. I, fig. 7 (drawing = Giovanelli 1876: Taf. I, No. 7), Mommsen 1853: Taf. I, 11 B (drawing), Sulzer 1855: Tav. VII (drawing), CII: tav. I, Corssen 1874: tav. XXIII, Oberziner 1883b: tav. XXIII, AIF I: tav. II, no. 37 (drawing), IR (photo = LIR), Morandi 1982: 201 (drawing), MLR (photo).

Length about 12 cm; written on the rim of the situla, starting at about 7.5 cm from CE-1.4. The inscription is the only one on the rim facing inward. It is applied with a broader tool (1 mm), possibly the same one as used for CE-1.1. As concerns ductus, the letters resemble those of CE-1.4 and CE-1.1. While the ductus may not be considered significant, it is clear that the sequences on the situla cannot have been all applied as one inscription.

The reading is unambiguous. The slightly wider gap between A s and V s probably indicates the word border, though the distances between letters before the space in question are irregular. vinuθalina, despite its length, can only be a patro- (or matro-)nymic in -na; φelna is the associated individual name. After final A s, a lacuna which damages another character: the tips of two oblique lines can be clearly seen above it – probably Θ s. Seeing as this character spoils a perfectly straight-forward interpretation, it is best interpreted as a delimiter, cp. NO-7.
